Employment Advocacy

Shaina here! Halie & I recently presented on how to decide when & if to disclose your disability during the job search / pre-employment process at COFC's Neurodiversity Initiative's first workshop. We were super excited when they reached out to us about presenting on the topic- so we surveyed our ETE (Empowerment through Employment) Participants to get their valuable experiences. From there we created some resources that may help you as you make the highly individual decision when & if to disclose your disability to your potential employer.

Let's go over the ADA Title 1 Laws to give you some background into how you are legally protected from discrimination...

If you haven't reflected upon & defined your professional or personal values, now is a good time to do so. These values help you define your boundaries & this is especially helpful when you are seeking out a meaningful career or position. Check out https://brenebrown.com/resources/living-into-our-values/ to review the process of discovering your values.

Now that you are refreshed on the ADA laws & you have your values in hand, let's use this Self-Disclosure tool to determine when/if you feel most empowered to disclose your disability to your employer.

If you have any further questions or need any additional support, please reach out to us! We would love to schedule a time to talk about your needs & how we can support you.
